Boston, MA - April 21, 2010 – Toyotas recall issues just keep coming. From what Toyota calls “sticky gas pedals” to a rollover issue with the Lexus GX 460, to rusting bolts on the 1998 - 2010 Sienna spare tire, over 10 million vehicles have been recalled by Toyota.
Toyota stepped up to the plate and paid the record fine that was levied against them, $16.4 Million USD, but would not take fault for the Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA) issue. Toyota accepted the fine so they wouldn’t have to accept the blame.
Let’s look at this more closely:
Toyota has also called the problem a “sticky gas pedal”. I guess that may be the easiest way to describe the issue. But it’s not at all correct. A sticky gas pedal would require a part of the accelerator assembly that is a physical part that can get stuck. Any of us who have been operating a vehicle for the last 20 – 30 years are well aware of what a real “sticky gas pedal” problem is. It may have happened to you or someone you know. Heck, it’s happened to me. It startled me that when I stepped on the brake in the 1970 Chevy Malibu I was driving, the engine kept revving. The gas pedal was stuck. Thanks to some quick thinking on my spouse’s part, she grabbed the accelerator pedal and pulled up on it. The acceleration stopped, we braked. Doing some routine maintenance and a little bit of silicone lubricant took care of the issue.
That car was built 40 years ago. Technology has taken us to new heights since then, and it’s been incorporated into our vehicles. You see, the new Toyotas that have been recalled don’t have an accelerator assembly. They operate on what is called “Drive by Wire” which, in essence, is a wire that runs from the accelerator pedal to the “brain” of the car. How Toyota can call that a sticky gas pedal baffles me. It’s not a “sticky gas pedal” at all, but a computer malfunction.
I know that a fix exists for the SUA problem. If you watched the video link above, you will know that the Decelerator is the answer for the SUA phenomenon.
